Style Network’s “Ruby”
Ruby, the new non-scripted reality series that follows 500-pound Ruby Gettinger’s unforgettable journey to lose weight and inspire others, is premiering on The Style Network Sunday, November 9th!
“Ruby” Offers Intimate Look at One Woman’s Life and Death Battle Against Obesity
Premieres Sunday, November 9 on The Style Network
Savannah resident Ruby Gettinger is beautiful, charming, charismatic and weighs a life-threatening 500 pounds. This November, Style’s cameras will follow Ruby’s personal journey to lose weight, get healthy and battle discrimination on the new and highly-anticipated reality series “Ruby.” With no-holds-barred honesty and unwavering optimism, Ruby shares her story, including her past and present battle with obesity, her struggle to find the lost memories of her childhood and her reunion with an ex-boyfriend who broke her heart. Along the way, Ruby seeks to inspire others to take the first bold steps towards a healthier and happier future. The powerful and heartwarming new series, “Ruby,” premieres Sunday, November 9 at 8:00 PM ET/PT, only on The Style Network.
Comprising nine non-scripted episodes, “Ruby” is about Ruby Gettinger’s genuine love of life, despite her struggle to lose weight. Even at her highest weight of 700 pounds, Ruby has never been afraid to go out — hanging out with friends, dancing or going to the movies — despite frequent disapproving stares and harsh comments by passersby. By sharing her positive and negative personal experiences and allowing viewers to come along on her weight-loss journey, Ruby hopes to help others realize that they are not alone and if she can do it, anyone can.
In the one-hour series premiere, Ruby has just been told by her doctor that if she does not lose weight, she risks life-threatening health complications. She talks about life in a world not equipped to handle a person of her size and makes note of the routine activities that she cannot do, such as painting her toenails, riding a bike or taking a bubble bath. Ruby is at a crossroads in her life and she decides it is time to get healthy.
Throughout the season, viewers get to know Ruby’s devoted friends and family — her nephew Jim, roommate Jeff and best friend Georgia, among others. They surround her constantly and adore her, but have inadvertently enabled her unhealthy eating and inactive lifestyle. Also figuring prominently in Ruby’s life is the team of experts devoted to making her weight-loss dreams a reality, including the doctors and dietician who help her understand the ill effects of obesity on her body and her bad food habits; her trainer that gets her exercising; and the psychiatrist that helps Ruby confront her memory issues.
Beyond following Ruby’s battle with obesity, future episodes find her traveling to Los Angeles to catch-up with old friends Billy Blanks Jr. and Brittany Daniel; planning her friend Georgia’s birthday; camping in Savannah; and getting a new look. Other heartfelt episodes include a church revival in support of Ruby’s weight loss efforts and a moving reunion with her ex-boyfriend Denny (who left her because she could not lose weight and subsequently broke her heart).
As Ruby struggles to lose weight and unravel the locked secrets of her childhood, viewers will be moved by her memorable and inspirational story. The journey begins with the premiere of “Ruby” on Sunday, November 9 at 8:00 PM ET/PT, only on Style.
“Ruby” is produced by Gay Rosenthal Productions. Executive Producers are Gay Rosenthal, Paul Barrosse and Tim Puntillo, as well as Style’s Executive Producer Sarah Weidman. Nicholas Caprio and Victoria Zielinski are Co-Executive Producers, joined by Brittany Daniel, who is a Consulting Executive Producer on the series.
To coincide with the premiere of “Ruby,” Style will launch a robust and informative Web microsite (mystyle.com/ruby) devoted to Ruby’s weight-loss journey. It will feature additional show information and highlights, blogs and vlogs (video blogs) and behind-the-scenes interviews with Ruby, including her video tour of Savannah. Visitors will also be able to communicate directly with Ruby using message board postings, as well as access expert advice nutrition, exercise and overall wellness through other user-friendly interfaces.

I don’t sell it…but I just want to say: IMELDA. I’ve never been able to be on a diet and make the right choice when I reach for an apple, but a brownie is sitting right beside it. However, when I started taking just 2 Imelda (a Chinese Herb pill) then I WAS able to make the right choices. What was even weirder….is that occassionally….I FORGET to eat. Look out on on the web…it is out there. Research it. Test it. My roomie (a TERRIBLY bad dieter) has lost 70 pounds since the first of the year. I have lost over 50. But again..the most amazing thing is that it controls your impulses!!

Ruby moved me. May I ask the previous poster if she has a financial interest in Imelda? Imelda reminds of Imelda Marcos of the many, many shoes and dictatorship.

I think the theme song should be an oldie by “Dion” “Ruby, Ruby”: it’s perfect – and she can dance to it and get inspired. “Ruby, Ruby, Ruby won’t you be mine”…
November 10th, 2008 at 3:49 pm
i saw ruby for the first time today. She is a person I would really like to know. She radiates warmth and a genuine person. You go girl. I’m 100% behind you.
November 10th, 2008 at 4:32 pm
I already love Ruby! From the first preview of the show last week I was hooked! It’s no wonder everyone just plain gushes around her – she’s completely delightful! I want to see her get skinny and healthy and go out there and take the world by force! I know you can do it Ruby!! I’d love to meet you! I homeschooled all three of my kids and have taken into my home over the years an assortment of troubled kids who needed love so I can relate to you. I am currently thinking if you can lose this weight I have no excuse whatsoever for not losing the 45# I need to lose from my current 190. You are an inspiration and I can’t wait for episode 2! Thanks for doing this as I think you could help a lot of people while reclaiming your life!
November 10th, 2008 at 7:12 pm
Ruby , I just wanted to say that you are just as beautiful on the outside as you are the inside. My children watched it with me and were so sad to know that people can be so cruel. We are rooting for you!!!!!
November 11th, 2008 at 4:17 am
I just wanted to say that within the first 5 minutes of watching Ruby I didn’t think she looked as “obese” as she is. She seems so “normal” and all her friends seem truly genuine too. I have been a yo yo dieter my entire life, and while I’m not as nearly as big is she is…I feel like my battle is just as difficult. She is very couragous and inspirational. I’m 44 years old and about 50 lbs over weight and have not been to the doctors in 4 years because I’m ashamed of my weight. Being weighed by someone is more than I can bare. How Ruby was able to get weighed at the doctor and on a Reality show is so brave.
I would love to be able to have a personal trainer and my meals already planned. It’s way too expensive. I wonder if the show is paying for all the help/motivation she is receiving. Otherwise, how can anyone living paycheck to paycheck afford it?!
Ruby, I’m praying for you and I know you can do it!!!

We share not only the same name but many of the same problems. I too am trying to come out of my shell. I am thirty nine and have spent my whole life making sure everyone is happy. I do not have time for me. I love your spirit and am doing this with you every step of the way. It is so hard and I always fail but I am doing this, this time and am using you as my ispiration. Lets have the Rubys of the world healthy and happy with who they are. You keep smiling girl.
November 11th, 2008 at 1:03 pm
You go girl!!!! I was so amazed by your friends on the show. they love you unconditionally !!! For you to decide your life is important to you is the biggest step you can take. I am also trying to fight my battle with being over weight and to see you proves to me that I can do it also.. I will be watching and praying that you win this battle.
November 11th, 2008 at 2:20 pm
Ruby your beautiful. Shine girl, Shine. You can do this. I don’t know what terrible things you have overcome and survived, but if you can get threw those things girl and still be able to smile, you can do this. God loves you and I’m sure that after the world hears your story they will love you too. God bless you. Keep your head up. *Sending prayers and good vibes your way*.
November 11th, 2008 at 2:29 pm
I’m truely inspired by Ruby. I have struggled all my life with weight. I can totally relate to all the problems Ruby has. I will be watching faithfully to see Ruby’s progress. Unlike Ruby, I don’t have a support system to help me along the way. Finances are a big issue when it comes to getting outside help. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Keep up the good work Ruby.
November 11th, 2008 at 5:56 pm

November 12th, 2008 at 11:25 am
Ruby,
I just want to let you know there are alot of people praying for you. I love your courage, and you are very fortunate to have the friends you have to support you. Keep your eye on the goal, like the doc saud 10# at a time. you truly are a inspiration to millions. God bless you………
November 12th, 2008 at 1:22 pm
Ruby, I was SO inspired after watching your first show! You are awesome and you have the determination in you to be healthy. You have a great support system which is half the battle in my opinion.
I have been overweight for the past 16 years so I know some of your struggles with society’s ignorance and intolerance for the overweight. At my highest I weighed 280, right now I weigh 253.5. My weight crept up when I got married and I haven’t lost it yet, but I work on it every day. The weight has even had an effect on my marriage (my husband wants me to lose weight), but I am doing this for ME now. I MUST do it for me this time and so must you.
I know we BOTH have what it takes in us to be successful….we have to learn to appreciate ourselves and our bodies and appreciate all of the little changes and successes along the way. I’m rooting for you Ruby and am looking forward to see your beautiful transformation!!!

November 12th, 2008 at 9:22 pm
Ruby, you are an inspiration to me. When I watched your show I found myself saying that is me, that is me. If I don’t get a handle on my weight now I will be right there with you. But it wasn’t just that, it was the way you feel about food, the way you become when you are on a diet or can’t have what you want to eat. It was portions of your childhood that you couldn’t remember. I never thought that anyone could feel the way I do or be anything like me. I just hope whatever is causing you to block your childhood is not what caused me to. I remember enough to know that I was molested. I cryed when I watched you because I felt like I was watching myself. You are so brave and beautiful and I wish you luck. I hope that I too will conquer my food addiction.
November 12th, 2008 at 10:02 pm
i just watched ruby and i came to tears. being a 25 year old over weight female i understand her problems and i am currently undergoing my own weightloss project and struggling every step of the way. i know its hard but i know she will over come it somehow someway. good luck and god bless you.
November 12th, 2008 at 10:49 pm
hello Ruby
My friend told me about your show. Im going to be looking for your next episode. Im over weight my self but Im reclaiming my life . I had the lapband surgery, Im really exsited on my weight loss, I’ve tried all kinds of diet, but they never helped. Im learning to eat in a different way which is healthy for me. We also discovered my hubby is a diaetic, which we are both learning to eat healthier together now. I would love to be able to chat with you and we can help each other so we can conquer, our battles against the monster that is trying to take control of our life. I really hope to hear from you.
On one part of your show my friend said you couldn’t wear a seat belt in the car, they make seat belt extenders for us. You can go to your car dealer in the part s department and the will give you them . They are called seat belt extenders.
Well good luck I hope to hear from you. It would be great to have a pin pal to talk over our ups and downs of our battles.
your friend from louisiana

Ruby is so beautiful and so inspiring! I know she will continue on her journey to her goal because she is full of so much life and I think she knows she can only live the life she wants to live by losing the weight that is holding her down! I weigh 326, and like Ruby have not been able to live the life I want to live. I find it hard now to “diet” and exercise because I am pregnant and i am terrified of gaining more weight. She is so inspirational and I plan on watching her week after week and hope that in time her enthusiasm and her spirit helps to move me to be just like her and finally finish that journey to my goal that I have been trying to take for 20 plus years now! I will pray for her success and can not wait to see more of her…or should I say less of her every week! ha ha! You go Ruby! YOU CAN DO IT! God bless and remember, YOU ARE WORTH IT!

I hope you are reading all these postings , everyone is behind you. You are beautiful person and very brave to do this on TV. – you are already a inspiration. While I may not have as much weight to lose as you, I feel the struggle to battle the “monster” is just the same.
I wish you well and can not wait to see you succeed!

Ruby, you are such a beautiful woman. You have opened my eyes and inspired me to stand up and do something for me by watching you do the same for yourself. so Thank you.
November 17th, 2008 at 3:14 am
Your a very strong person Ruby .. I commend you for your goals and your commitment for bettering yourself. I think you made a very wise decision by not getting yourself caught up Denny and his personal issues. If a man is going to love you then he needs to love at your worst before he can love you at your best. That doesn’t mean he leaves when he feels like your not loosing weight fast enough for him. Do everything for yourself your friends are great and I think Denny is the best 180 lbs you lost. Take care and good luck !! Oh, and I love your dogs .. What breed are they ?? Please email me the breed .. Anita from Sacramento, CA

Hello Ruby,
I watched your show for the first time today and I must say that I was so touched by you. I think you are a beautiful woman with so much to offer and you are truly making a difference in this world . Your courage and determination is contageous as well as your lovely spirit and outlook. You have a special place in my heart as I feel I know you just from your show. We all have our own “unique”demon to deal with and I have found inspiration from you to help me with mine. Thank you and I wish you all the best Ruby. I wish I could give you a big hug!!!

Greetings Ruby from West Virginia …
kicked into outer space. I too am over weight …. BUT …. only by 20 pounds. I say “only” …. but 20 pounds can be someone else’s 50 pounds or another’s 100 pounds ….and so on. Even losing 20 pounds can seem an impossible goal at times and it is so easy to give in … give up …. and to simply not give a damn. But, sadly, we still do . Give a damn, that is. So, anyway, you are my inspiration Ruby. I think if Ruby will do this for Ruby …..then Lilly will do this for Lilly.
I have become a big fan of yours. I think you are utterly delightful, beautiful inside and OUT and a true inspiration to many people …. And not only those who are over weight. Now, please don’t throw me overboard as being utterly ridiculous, insensitive and just so thoughtlessly stupid that I should not only be ignored, but should have my “astronaut”
Oh, one last thing …. your old Bo was very handsome and, like you said, I am sure he loves you in his own way …BUT…. I am so glad of the way you handled his coming back to see you again. You see, Ruby, he has a certain kind of beauty on the outside …. but it is not, like yours, a beauty that goes clean to the bone. Bravo for your words to him …. cause you were speaking for thousands and thousands and THOUSANDS of your fans who would have kicked your “astronaut” a good one had you not reacted as you did!
Never Change Ruby …. only in the little superficial areas that “you” want to change for yourself. Like all of us keep telling you, You R BEAUTIFUL inside and OUT!
Lilly

Ruby, you are beautiful and so amazingly brave.
You will lose this weight, keep it off and live a long healthy life. You are finally doing it for you.Doing it for someone else will never work.Men come and go and I am glad you are taking your stand on the ex-beau.
I am not sure he can be a friend for you ,he wasn’t one before.Your other “friends” have been there through it all and not with conditions.Concentrate on you and your goals.Need not waste your time and energy on people who don’t have the capacity to love you.Love yourself.I am pulling for you. Ruby is inspirational, fun, and full of life.
November 18th, 2008 at 11:54 pm
Ruby,
I watch your show and I love it! I too have battled with weight issues but unlike you I have had family members call me names for being over weight. My own husband refused to sleep with me and be intimate because of my weight.
Well, Ruby you know what I did, I started a healthy diet plan for myself and exercising and the weight is falling off. Since I started this change for myself and I found i am happier either way and I can do this. I told my husband a month ago that if he couldn’t treat me right that when I do lose my weight I will refuse him to see how he likes it. The family members who called me names now can not hurt me anymore because they have nothing to make fun of.
I love your personality Ruby and you are a true inspiration to all of us.
I will pray for you. Good luck and you can do it.

Hello Ruby, you are one gutsy lady to go on TV and show us all your trials and hopes. I know you have diabetes and I am just wondering why your doctors have not tried prescribing Byetta for you. I have lost 100 pounds in a year on Byetta therapy with Metformin. Byetta sure makes cravings go away. I do wish you all the best and will be watching your progress as you slim down to a more svelte but no less charming person.

Ruby, You are a true inspiration, you have the best attitude and are so genuine and real, I watched a mini-marathon of your show over thanksgiving weekend and was touched within the first 10 minutes. I think you are absolutely beautiful inside and out. Thank You for sharing your story, it is a nice eye-opening change to watch you rather then young rich kids in LA reality shows. Savannah is a beautiful town. I live in Central Florida and had a brieft trip up there in May of this year. My Boyfriends younger sister graduated from SCAD, so I didnt see much but would love to come back!!!!
December 3rd, 2008 at 1:25 pm
I know you can do it. I cheated and had surgery. I was 350 lbs. I now weight 150. I did not have your strength or support system. I believe friends and family have to be involved or you can not suceed. I come from a family of overweight people that wanted everybody to be like them. They did not support my decision to have the surgery before or after it was done. The surgery saved my life. You are very lucky to have family and friends that well help you thru this life challenge. There is nothing like the first time you can walk into a discount store and look at clothes and think I can buy anything I want.

I just saw your show on December 14th,2008. You are such a beautiful person. I can feel the pain that you felt when you got hurt by your ex boyfriend. You seem like a smart person to tell the dude to take a hike!! No person should give other people “conditions” for this or that and especially marriage. Sounds to me like he is a game player. I went through that kind of thing after my first divorce having guys not want to date me because I had pregnancy weight. Now years later and 2 brand new knees, I too have to lose 110 lbs…that’s half the weight that I was. I am 5’1″ and that is the perfect healthy weight for me. I have lost 28-30 lbs in just 8 weeks using the Weightwatchers Plan and working out every day.
Ruby, you will feel so much better when you lose 10%, 40% and all of the weight that you want to to be healthy. It’s SAD how the general public TREATS people who are obese and have weight problems compared to thin people. Just think, about 65 % of people in the U.S. are overweight these days.
I give you so much credit because of your COURAGE to not only lose the weight but also go on TV…As far as Denny is concerned, he is just another JERK in this world…plus the fact that he’s a wannabee celebrity that wants to give you all the attention and be on your show.
Just get healthy for yourself, get your career going if you don’t have one and believe in yourself and God. God will help you through this. I will say a prayer for you to continue your success.
Take care and God Bless You Ruby!!!

Ruby, I am a thin female and I think what you are doing is FABULOUS! I have had the same type of weight issues all my life but in the opposite way. Most people do not know how thin people feel either. I have heard the word skinny all my life and I know most people think I have nothing to complain about but when people say ‘Oh my God you are so skinny!” it hurts. Or when I wear a dress or skirt and people point at my legs and say “Oh my God look how skinny her legs are!”. I even have a dear friend who will tell others “Look how skinny her legs are!” and laugh. I have also heard “You are so skinny don’t you ever eat?”. Believe it or not this does hurt us thin people. I have had others literally start laughing at my legs. I eat all the time and cannot gain weight. No bulemia issues here or Anorexia I eat all the time. I know people do say cruel things to larger people but that hurts and is very rude and mean. It is the same feeling us thin people feel when we are told we are SKINNY. I mean you should not go up to someone who is larger and say Oh my God are you fat and I think that people feel they can say SKINNY to people easier than You are so fat. Such a cruel world. People need to stop pointing out peoples flaws either thin or larger. No one should here these things.I wish you all the best in your goals and think you are truly an inspiration to all. God Bless and you are a beautiful woman!

Ruby, I watch you and my heart hurts for you, because there are so many small minded people out there in the world.
You are very brave to put yourself right out there for the whole world to see. You are an inspiration. I am over weight and I am in the process of going for the lap band, That doesn’t mean that this is going to take care of my addiction for food but it will help me in the long run. Ruby you also have an amazing support system with your friends and nephew. Big KUDDOS for them all.
my family is right behind you when you go for your walk,to the gym, or when you go out with your friends. We love you God Bless Becky

Ruby, I have just started watching your show and find you to be the most delightful lady ever. You have a sunshine around you that is most inspirational. I too have an addition to food and it is very difficult to be around people that can eat whatever they want. Keep up the good work. Your life depends on it. I look forward to when i see you next year on some talk show (Oprah. or Dr. Phil) to see your success. And remember i said when and NOT if. Be strong.
Love A.

I am the publisher with my wife of a plus size magazine called SXLmagazine. i just want to say that we support ruby with her journey. although SXLmagazine promotes the plus size as being sexy. but we also feel that a woman should be comfortable in her body.

Hey Ruby,
I am the wife of a doctor. I weigh 245 pounds. It is so embarassing especially since doctors should all have slim and vivacious women for wives. I rarely like to be seen with my husband and avoid it as much as possible. It is an awful feeling to go to his medical meetings and have everyone judging me. i thought i was pretty confident….but the whole thing is taking a toll on me. I have begun to try and dig myself out. You are fortunate to have support. I live in a world where my support system says: just do it, just push the plate away….anyway, you are such an encouragement to me. i long for sunday nights when i can grab some of your possitive energy….Oh well, thanks.

DEAR RUBY,
I WANT TO THANK YOU FOR GOING TO THE GYN.. YOU HELPED ME A GREAT DEAL. YOUR FRIENDS WERE ENCOURAGING AND MADE THE APPOINTMENT, WHAT COURAGE. WHEN I WAS IN MY MID 30′S, THAT’S OVER 25 YEARS AGO, MY GYN TOLD ME I HAD CANCER. I WAS DIVORCED WITH A DAUGHTER OF NINE YEARS OLD. I WAS DEVISTATED, AND FEARED FOR MY DAUGHTER MORE THAN ANYTHING. NOW I AM 62YEARS OLD, STILL ALIVE AND KICKING THANKS TO JESUS.
I STARTED HAVING PROBLEMS AGAIN AND I FEARED THE WORST, LIKE ALL OF US. BUT YOU GAVE ME THE COURAGE TO MAKE AND APPOINTMENT AND SEE THIS NEW GYN I DON’T HAVE THE RESULTS YET. BUT CANCER IS A 4 LETTER WORD THAT SCARES THE HELL OUT OF YOU. BUT I KNOW NOW THAT IT IS A WORD, NOTHING ELSE. BECAUSE IT CAN BE CURED AND LIFE GOES ON. I HAVE GONE THROUGH DOUBLE KNEE REPLACEMENT, OPEN HEART QUAD BY-PASS, THYROIDETOMY, ETC. AND I AM STILL HERE AND LOVING EVERY MINUTE OF LIFE.
DON’T LET ANYTHING OR ANYONE GET YOU DOWN. YOU ARE YOUNG, BEAUTIFUL, VIVACIOUS, WITTY, AND A LADY WITH EVERYTHING GOING FOR YOU.
YOU CAN ACCOMPLISH ANYTHING YOU WANT….AND REMEMBER GOD LOVES YOU AND SO I. YOU HAVE A FREIND FOR LIFE.
HAVE A GREAT AND WONDERFUL DAY.
YOURS,
GERRY HALL.

Ruby is suffering from childhood trauma, psycho, sexual, and/or social, which her obesity precludes, in her mind, the reoccurance of.

Have really enjoyed watching Ruby. However, I’m
a little disappointed in her attitude this season. It
seems she has become very over bearing and self
centered. She has some wonderful friends in Jeff
and Georgia. She needs to back off a little bit.
I do admire her determination and wish her all the
best in her weight loss effort.

Ruby, I just watched a rerun of the episode of you and Denny going to LA again. Ruby….YOU HAVE IMPACTED MY LIFE more than you know. Tonights episode reminded me that I am NOT beautiful because of my outside appearances, I am beautiful bc of the person I am insided and always will be. When Denny finally admitted he could not be wth you at your weight of 370 lbs I realized one of my closest male friends and the person who I have truly loved for the past 2 years will not ever love me the way I love him bc he’s not truly attracted to me at my current weight of 275lbs. I’ve lost 15 lbs so far and still going strong. Even if I get to my goal weight I do not want to be with him and we will always just be close friends. We dated and had sex for a few months before we became “friends” and I will not put up with that. I stopped having a purely physical relationship with him-firiends with benefits-this past November and I’m sticking to my guns!!!!!! I loved how you taught the children the story of David. You are such an inspiration to me, I love watching your show and would love to have the honor of meeting you one day. I’m one of your biggest fans Ruby. You are an inspiration to all women, skinny, chunky, fat or anywhere inbetween. Keep up the great work and stay your wonderful strong self. Thank you thank you thank you. My eyes have been opened tonight wider than I’ve seen in a long time. God will place a wonderful loving man in my life one day and he will love me for me, not my weight. It will be true unconditional love………..that is what I hope for you as well!!!!!!! You go girl.
